Hello Everybody,

Welcome, to A Reel Geek. My name is Erin O’Donnell, and I am from Austin, Texas. I am currently attending Texas State University, and I am majoring in Mass Communication.

I created this blog as a way to express my love of movies and discuss films as a fan rather than as I critic. For the last few years, I have been watching movies as a hobby and talking about and showing my friends the movies I love to watch. Because I love movies, I wanted to share my love of movies with the world and engage in healthy debates, as well as meet others who love movies just as much as I do. As a film enthusiast or a reel geek as I prefer, I love reading and listening to different opinions on films I enjoy and love giving and receiving recommendations of films to watch. I want this blog to be a place where conversation can take place without having to worry about what others think, a place where other reel geeks can hang out and just geek about the movies they love. To recap any opinion about a movie I leave on this blog will be solely my opinion and nobody else, but I am open to discussing why I felt a certain way about a particular movie, and I try my best to validate my opinion.

The style of my blog will consist of weekly Top Five lists. I find lists to be an easy way to navigate conversation, and be able to articulate why I love/dislike a particular movie. Lists I find are also very fun and addicting to read, and often get straight to the point of discussion. In the future, I will do my best to integrate other social media, such as Twitter and Instagram, into the blog but for right now I will leave it as is.

To let you guys get to know me a little bit better, I have placed my first list down below of my favorite movies and why I like them.

I hope you all enjoy the blog, and I will continue to post more as the semester rolls by.

My Top Five Favorite Movies(In no particular Order)

  1. Fight Club– I am not a huge Brad Pitt fan, I think he is a great actor, just not one I will purposely want to see. However, I believe the role of Tyler Durden as Pitt portrays him is one of the best acting roles of Pitt career. Alongside Edward Norton as the Narrator, these twos create a beautiful story that has last the years and is a cinematic masterpiece. Because of this movie, I am a fan of David Flinch and will always see the films he makes
  2. Dog Day Afternoon– This is Al Pacino at his best and with one of the best screenplays in existence. This movie is a cinematic classic, as well as a great character study piece. From the first to last scene, you are glued to the edge of your seat, cheering for Pacino character as he robs from the bank and keeps the tellers hostage to reach his personal goal. If you love witty dialogue and movies based on real events, this is the perfect film to watch.
  3. Guardian of the Galaxy– I am a big fan of Marvel and this film did not disappoint when it came out. I have seen it five times in the theater and listen to the soundtrack on a religious basis. It’s humorous without being too silly, yet it does not take itself seriously, the perfect aspect for a movie about a comic book property most audiences have never heard of until the film came out. Not only does this reflect my love for Marvel, but for the Science Fiction as a whole, as it breath new life into this genre. It may not be your traditional superhero movie, but it is the best thing to come from Marvel Studios in a long time.
  4. Blues Brothers– This is a film I can watch any time and any day of the week. The chemistry between Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi is fantastic, and with the perfect blend of comedy and blues, movies like this just do not exist anymore. Along with being highly quotable, this film also has a fantastic soundtrack. You can find me singing the tunes from this movies any day of the week as well. Along with the multitude of celebrity cameos, this film is worth at least one watch.
  5. X-men: First Class– Once again I am a huge fan of Marvel with the X-men being my favorite superhero team of all time. This movie, in my opinion, saved the X-men franchise after the disasters that were X-men: The Last Stand and X-men Origins: Wolverine. Director Matthew Vaughn did a fantastic job at reviving what could have been a dead franchise and created the stepping stones for Days of Future Past to be the huge success it was, by setting up an elaborate storyline and creating complex characters from the characters we already know and love. Because of this movie, I will forever follow the career of Michael Fassbender, James Mcavoy, and Vaughn himself, because of how much I love this movie.
